There is a sobering reality that every person on earth will one day discover.
For those who have surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ, this broken world is the closest they will ever come to hell.
Every disappointment.
Every sickness.
Every betrayal.
Every funeral.
Every anxious night.
Every tear.
Every struggle with sin.
Every moment of suffering.
This is as bad as it will ever be.
Because one day Christ will wipe away every tear, death will be defeated forever, and we will dwell in His presence where there is no more pain, sorrow, or mourning.
"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain..."
Revelation 21:4
But there is another side to this truth that should shake us to our core.
For those who reject Christ...
This life is the closest they will ever come to heaven.
Every sunrise they enjoy.
Every laugh with family.
Every friendship.
Every blessing.
Every taste of love.
Every beautiful mountain.
Every child's smile.
Every moment of joy they experience today is only a shadow of God's common grace.
Without Christ, those blessings will one day be gone forever.
Jesus spoke more about hell than anyone else in Scripture because He understood what was at stake.
That should change the way we live.
It should change the way we love.
It should change the urgency with which we share the Gospel.
Because the people sitting next to us at work...
Our neighbors...
Our friends...
Even members of our own families...
May be living the closest thing to heaven they will ever know.
That thought should break our hearts.
Not because we're better than they are. But because someone once cared enough to tell us about Jesus. The Gospel isn't merely an invitation to improve your life. It's an invitation to be reconciled to the God who created you before eternity separates you from Him forever.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Identify one person in your life who does not know Christ. Pray for that person by name every day this week and ask God for a natural opportunity to listen, serve, share your testimony, or clearly explain the hope of the Gospel.
REFLECTION
Who has God already placed close enough to me that I should care about where they will spend eternity?
